If it's not working, change it up!

 Hello friends,

Remember when I said that becoming the Learning Coach for our son's online school this year would "force" ( haha) me to spend all kinds of time in my quilt room? I was envisioning hours and hours in there working away on all kinds of lovely projects....

The truth was that I have had the same routine for years, where I clean and grocery shop and do laundry, and all kinds of "housework" type chores FIRST and then do fun stuff like quilting and crafting. A reward of sorts for getting the yucky stuff done!

So when son started online school I continued with this routine...problem was that by the time afternoon rolled around, I didn't have the energy or drive to complete anything quilty. I just wanted to sit and do nothing (well, other than watch some TV or play on my phone). So boring, and so unproductive!

I decided I needed to flip-flop my routine! Mornings are now spend in my quilt room working on little projects here and there, all while supervising and giving feedback to the 13 year old when needed, and after lunch I get to work doing those chores. My brain is at its brightest first thing in the morning, so spending it on math and problem-solving in my quilts is a good thing. I really don't need to be all that with it in order to clean the toilet, you know what I mean?

This whole topic ties into another issue that I have heard people are having this year. 2020 has been a tough year and I know some people have really lost their sewing mojo. And that is too bad because I think sewing something ( or doing anything creative!) is just the thing to get people out of their Covid funk! Start small and tell yourself that you only have to do something creative for 10 minutes a day, and I think you will find that before too long you are wanting to spend more time creating something beautiful. And don't be afraid to try something new! I joined a group that paints and does all kinds of creative crafts and it has been a wonderful, creative, and uplifting journey!

But if you want to stick to quilting, you could try a new technique ( I recommend collage quilting!),

something really simple ( how about some embroidery?),

or even just reorganizing your quilting room and supplies. You might be surprised at what you find!

Until next time~happy creating! And remember:

  1. Thank you for the font change. I’m so glad you flipped your day around, I often do the same or sweep and clean during my day. My hand stitching I leave for nights. I believe we are better people when we are creative.

  2. I've gotten up rather early on a few days and it's amazing how much brain power I have to use in my sewing room than sewing at night.

  3. Sweeet. I am happy that your son is home and both of you can be productive together.
I also sew in the morning, eat lunch and clean house. or most days visit my daddy. Cleaning is something I just fit in. I keep a list so I know what needs to be done. haha
Sewing is more important. We are creating heirlooms

  4. If I wait to spend time in the sewingroom I just sit and stare. I go in there first thing in the morning

  7. This year certainly has changed many things. I dont feel like quilting, but will embroider. Hopefully I will make more quilts, but it will be when I have the time atm I have a small productive vegetable patch, but I will stop during the summer as its too hot here to plant vegetables, maybe then Ill have a bit more time to create. Enjoy your creative time and I love that tulip quilt.

    1. I think that you have to do things you enjoy...if crafting is a chore then what is the point, right? Good luck getting some quilting in when your weather gets too hot to garden ;).

  8. I have to confess, if I start my day in the sewing room I often won't do my housework. I get so involved in what I'm working on that time slips away. I'm thankful I have someone to do most of the house cleaning. I'm going to have to try harder to get some work done in the house. I need to do some major cleaning, organizing and getting rid of things we don't use.
