Fall sew-along part 2 (2021)

Hello and happy new week to you! ( clicking on the highlighted title will allow you to view this post in your browser where it looks so much nicer!)

Today I am back with part 2 of our fall sew-along. Last week your instructions were to down load the pattern ( click here if you are still in need of that), and this week we are getting into the cutting of our fabrics.

(these were some of the fabrics I was considering using in my version)

If you want to make your quilt the same size as Amanda's, you will need to cut fabric for 20 blocks. But this pattern is super easy to make bigger or smaller, so if that is what you are opting to do, adjust your fabric cutting accordingly.

For each block you will need to cut the following:

1 - 8.5 inch square

4 - 3.5 by 8.5 rectangles ( all the same fabric)

4 - 3.5 inch squares ( all the same fabric, but good contrast to the center square and surrounding rectangles)

For my fabrics I used Fat Quarters for my rectangle pieces and found that by laying them length-wise it allowed me to cut the 3.5 by 8.5 rectangles the most efficiently with little to no waste, like this:

Fold your fabric up....

and ( after squaring your fabric) start cutting your rectangles:

Trim to correct size and you will end up with 2 of your needed rectangles. So one more cut just like this gives you all your rectangles for one block. I found that most of the time I was able to cut enough rectangles out of one FQ for 3 blocks.
( aren't these looking so fun already??)

For cutting my larger center squares I used yardage, so started by cutting a 8.5 strip, which I then subcut into squares.
( I decided to go with a mix of 3 fabrics for my center squares, mostly because I didn't have enough of the one fabric that I really wanted to feature ( the multi-color plaid). So adding in some simple red and orange checks seemed like the best solution!)

And for my little corner squares I started by cutting a 3.5 inch strip, which I then subcut into 3.5 inch squares.

Even though you might look at the instructions and think it will take forever to cut all this fabric, it actually went very fast and I had my fabric cut in no time at all!

And voila, ready to start sewing those blocks together! But we will get to that part next week ;).
So to sum up: Your goal for this week is to cut all your fabrics so that you will be ready to start sewing your blocks next week.

Any questions? Please ask! Sometimes instructions are perfectly clear to me but to someone else they might not be. Please don't be shy!

Until next time~ happy cutting BWAH HA HA  ;)
