Hello and a happy new week to you!
Today I'm back with part 2 of our summer sewalong. ( You can find part 1 by clicking here).
Last week your task was to decide on a color scheme and a possible size, although this quilt easily allows you to go bigger or smaller so you can just decide as you go ( providing you have enough of your chosen fabric/color).
Just to remind you, this is the quilt pattern we are working on:
This quilt consists of just one block, but made in 2 different color ways, a light and a dark.
This week I thought we could cut our fabrics for those blocks.
So for block A you are going to cut the following pieces:
You will need 2 pieces that measure 3 by 6 from a dark fabric, and one 3 by 6, PLUS one 3 by 8 of a light fabric.
This block A makes the light PLUS in the pattern.
For block B you will need to cut the following pieces:
For block B you need 2 pieces that measure 3 by 6 of the light fabric, and one 3 by 6, PLUS one 3 by 8 of the dark fabric.
Block B makes the dark PLUS block.
This week you can go ahead and cut all your fabrics for as many blocks as you think you are going to need for your layout. Remember that these blocks finish at 8 inches square so you will want to keep that in mind when thinking about your finished quilt.
One item that I think will come in very handy to keep your pieces organized are these fabric binding clips:
You may already have these in your quilting supplies, as they are most often used for holding your binding in place when hand sewing the back, but they also come in handy when trying to stay organized! If you don't have some, here is a handy link ( click): Alright, that is all for this week. See you again next Monday for the next set of instructions, sewing the blocks together!Have a great week, and happy creating!

Wasn’t going to jump in but yesterday I took the plunge , pulled fabrics and made a sample block. Can’t wait to see everyone’s choices and how different the quilts will look just by changing up fabrics. Enjoy your week. My tip when cutting , cut the 3” x 6” bars a smidgen bigger up to 1/4” longer. That way you don’t have to be so careful when sewing those logs perfectly aligned because after they are joined it’s easier to square up, resize and then cut into the 3” x 8” segments.
