July 2026~ Gift Sewalong: key ring

 Hello everyone!

Can you believe that it is July already? I can't! These months are just flying by, and before you know it gift giving season will be upon us!

I hope that you have been having fun sewing along with the gift ideas I have been sharing! And of course, I try and come up with gifts that would work for many occasions, not just the holidays, so always feel free to change things up to fit your needs!

If you have been following along, these are the gift ideas I have shared so far this year:

January: Personalized hand towels ( click to read that post)

February: Lined tote bags ( click to read that post).

March: Ornaments and Tags ( click to read that post).

April: Granny Square Quilt Block ( click to read that post).

May: Little Darling Gnomies( click to read that post).

June: Star Pillow ( click to read that post).

So what is the gift idea for July?

Key Rings!

This is such a fun project and you can of course personalize it to suit the recipient or the specific key ;).

It is a really quick make as well and I love those kinds of projects! In fact, I made mine, stuck it on my keys, went shopping, and got a compliment on it that same day! Talk about instant gratification!

This is what you will need to make one key ring:

  • fabric scraps
  • 2 Felt pieces ( a little larger than your chosen design)
  • ribbon ( approx 9" long)
  • jump ring ( available at Walmart or office supply stores)
  • dies
  • fusible web

Grab some scraps that fit your die shapes and fuse web to the back ( follow directions on the packaging).

Place your fabric on your chosen die and cut:

By the way, I used the Crazy Petals die. It has lots of fun shapes that you put together yourself to make whatever you want ;). Click here to have a look at that die ( it's on SALE!)

{now would also be a good time to tell you that my post contains affiliate links and I receive a small commission if you buy through one of my links, at absolutely ZERO extra cost to you}

Place your cut fabric pieces on one of your felt pieces and fuse them down ( be careful that your felt doesn't melt).

Go to your sewing machine and stitch around your shapes with whatever stitch you like.

( note that I sewed my petals down first, and then added the center circle!)

After you stitch all your shapes down, take a sharp pair of scissors ( I LOVE these and own 3 pairs: click), and trim close to your fabric shapes, all the way around so that a little bit of your felt still shows, like this:

Now grab your ribbon ( about 9" works well), and thread it through your jump ring and fold it like this so that your two raw ends are even ( more or less).

Place the two raw edges of your ribbon in between your last piece of felt AND your completed shape, like this:

I placed my ribbon fairly far down in between because I don't want it to come loose!
When you have everything positioned like you want it, pin everything together.

Stitch around the shapes again, reinforcing where the ribbon inserts in between the two felt shapes. But read the directions below for the details!

This time around I tried to match my thread color to my felt color so it would be camouflaged and then I stitched on that little narrow strip of felt all the way around. ( including over the ribbon).

Trim around the edge once again, cutting close to the first felt edge and just flip the ribbon out of the way when you get to that part so you cut under the ribbon.

And you are done! Here is the front....

And this is what the back looks like:

So fun!
As I mentioned, I used my key ring the same day I made it, and the cashier at the pharmacy complimented me on it because obviously it is pretty unique.
And like I said, you can make whatever shape matches your needs!
I think I might have to make another one for our shed key, but use the  little house die....and maybe one for the dog sitter and use the doggie die? Ha!

Please let me know if you have any questions or if something is not clear!
And happy creating!
Monique
